Call for Abstracts: CLARIN2020
5–7 October 2020, Madrid, Spain

The CLARIN Annual Conference is organized for the wider Humanities and Social Sciences community in order to exchange experiences and best practices in working with the CLARIN infrastructure and to share plans for future developments. 

You are invited to submit your proposals until 14 April 2020.

Four additional sessions have been planned around the scientific programme of the CLARIN Annual Conference 2020 in Madrid, with the aim of fostering a deeper embedding of Research Infrastructures in basic and applied research as well as university teaching, and to inspire further development of the CLARIN Research Infrastructure based on user needs. The four elements are:

• CLARIN Student Session

• CLARIN Consultation Session

• CLARIN in the Classroom

This month ‘Tour de CLARIN’ visited Norway. Norway joined CLARIN ERIC as a member in 2015 after having been an observer since 2013. The Norwegian national infrastructure for language resources and technology is called CLARINO.

The recent Tour de CLARIN posts include an introduction to CLARINO, the recourse Nordic Dialect Corpus (NDC) and the tool Glossa – a user-friendly corpus search system.

PORTULAN CLARIN has been recognized as a new B-Centre by the CLARIN assessment committee. After reassessment the CLARIN-PL Language Technology Centre, Bayerisches Archiv für Sprachsignale and CLARINO Bergen Center were re-certified as B-Centres.

CLARIN B-Centres are technical centres, they are the backbone of CLARIN. These units, often a university or an academic institute, offer the scientific community access to resources, services and knowledge on a sustainable basis. Therefore, there are strict criteria to become a CLARIN B-Centre: it should be based on a stable technical and institutional foundation.

CLARIN ERIC is proud to announce that SAFMORIL, the CLARIN Knowledge Centre for Systems and Frameworks for Morphologically Rich Languages has been officially recognized as a CLARIN K-Centre.

SAFMORIL brings together researchers and developers in the area of computational morphology and its application during language processing. The focus of SAFMORIL is actual, working systems and frameworks based on linguistic principles and providing linguistically motivated analyses and/or generation on the basis of linguistic categories.

The CLARIN-IT Repository hosted at the ILC4CLARIN Centre provides the community with a lexical resource for the Arabic language. The resource results from automatic extraction from the medieval dictionary al-qāmūs l-muḥīṭ, which was compiled by the Persian lexicographer Al-firuz’abadi and is the most considerable and comprehensive abridged dictionary of the Arabic language. Considering that Arabic is a language with few language resources, the release of al-qāmūs l-muḥīṭ: a digital Arabic dictionary is important for the scientific community because it contains a monolingual resource resulting from the automatic conversion of the medieval dictionary as well as a bilingual (Arabic-English) resource resulting from the automatic translation of lemmas and senses obtained using An Advanced Learner's Arabic-English Dictionary by H. Anthony Salmoné.

In a recent episode of the EuroScientist Technoculture podcast, Europeana director Harry Verwayen talks to interviewer Federica Bressan about Europeana and the value it provides for research and research professionals. He highlights Europeana's connection to EOSC, DARIAH and CLARIN, and the need for researchers to engage in the creation of both manual and automated semantic enrichments to the data Europeana has collected.

The handbook Encoding Correspondence. A Manual for Encoding Letters and Postcards in TEI-XML and DTABf is now online with a first set of articles.

This handbook will help scholars to encode letters and postcards in TEI-XML and DTABf. It summarizes the discussions of the corresponding workshop held by the TEI Correspondence SIG and CLARIN-D at BBAW in Berlin in October 2018. You are invited to review and give feedback until 30 April 2020! After the public peer review phase, the articles will be revised and published in version 2 of the handbook.

The Saarbrücken Cookbook corpora (SaCoCo) can now be downloaded under a free license, via CLARIN VLO. The SaCoCo diachronic corpus is made up of cooking recipes organized into two different collections: historical and contemporary.

EVENTS & CALLS

The registration for the 5th annual conference “Digital Humanities in the Nordic and Baltic Countries” (DHN2020) is open. The early bird registration rates are applicable until 2 February 2020.

The conference will explore issues related to the research of digitized and digitally born cultural heritage, digital history and folkloristics, digital approaches to studying, teaching and the revitalisation of endangered and small languages and indigenous cultures, participatory research methods and crowdsourcing in digital humanities and heritage studies, application of natural language processing methods, corpus linguistics, digital news archives, preservation and management of research data, digital services in memory institutions.

The LiSeH Spring School 2020 will give an introduction to the concepts related to the Semantic Web and Linked Data and will give an overview of semantic web technologies and tools with a special focus on application scenarios in the Humanities

The LR4SSHOC workshop will introduce the SSHOC project and its ambitions, it  will discuss the embedding of SSHOC in the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC), and will set the basis  for a dialogue with the LREC community. The 2020 LR4SSHOC workshop will be held as part of LREC2020.

The paper submission deadline is 19 February 2020.

The Call for Papers of the second ParlaCLARIN workshop is now open. The workshop aims to bring together developers, curators and researchers of regional, national and international parliamentary debates that are suitable for research in disciplines in the Humanities and Social Sciences. The workshop will be held as part of LREC2020.

The paper submission deadline is 14 February 2020.

Subsequent to the first workshop on Computational Impact Detection from Text Data held at LREC 2018, the second workshop will address research questions of growing relevance and attention in linguistics, computational social science, and public policy, among other areas in this workshop. The workshop organizers invite papers for new work on methods of Impact Research.

The paper submission deadline is 20 February 2020.

The South African Centre for Digital Language Resources (SADiLaR) is organizing a workshop in the field of African Indigenous Language Resources. This workshop aims at boosting the field of African indigenous languages, providing an overview of the current state-of-the-art and emphasizing the  availability of African indigenous language resources, including both data and tools.

The paper submission deadline 16 February 2020

In the context of the CLASSLA Knowledge Centre for language resources and technologies of South Slavic languages, the Slovenian CLARIN.SI and the Bulgarian CLADA-BG are organising a CLARIN User Involvement workshop.

The main objectives of the three-day lunch-to-lunch workshop are:

1. to disseminate the language resources and technologies of South Slavic languages available in the context of the CLASSLA Knowledge Centre;

2. to foster networking among researchers of South Slavic languages;

3. to obtain feedback on the community needs and preferences.

The deadline for applications is 15 February 2020. 

ESSLLI 2020 is a two week event that provides an interdisciplinary setting in which courses and workshops are offered in logic, linguistics and computer science. Courses (foundational, introductory and advanced) and workshops cover a wide variety of topics within three interdisciplinary areas of interest: language and computation, logic and language, and logic and computation.
